He's Been Here Through Everything

There's a specific kind of company that doesn't ask anything of you. It doesn't need you to be on, or interesting, or consistent. It doesn't keep score, it just stays. The kind of love that shows up at the same time every morning or finds you on the couch when things are hard. Most of us spend our whole lives looking for it. I found mine in a dog.
He's 15 now. I got him at five and a half weeks old (small enough to hold in two hands🥹), and he has been my most constant and consistent companion for longer than most relationships in my life have lasted. He was there for the moves, the hard seasons, the long nights and the good ones. He doesn't care what I do for work. He doesn't care what I look like or which version of me I'm wearing that day. He just knows: me. He's the one that's always been there and he has never once asked me to earn anything.
He has this full, beautiful coat that turns heads. Depending on the day, on the light, he looks like a bear, a bunny and sometimes a deer. People point it out constantly. He is the most joyful thing in my life.
He has a little brother at home who depends on him completely, follows his lead, and looks to him for steadiness because he's just that kind of dog. The ones who get him always say the same thing unprompted: he's something special. He carries this extreme intelligence and this quiet power and majestic spirit that doesn't quite feel like a dog. He's got that "He just knows things" energy.
He's a senior now, which means slower mornings, adjusted walks, and a recent scare that required antibiotics and more anxious monitoring than I expected from myself. This week we'll go to the vet for the 6th time in under a month. For now he's okay, we got ahead of it, but we're still fighting. His care is everything, and he deserves every bit of it.
